Monster Rearing

LittleSheep.png

Monster Rearing is a feature of Mog Gardens in which players can raise monsters from childhood to maturity. When cared for properly, the monsters can provide the player with items, change appearances, and even confer a global bonus similar to Moghancements.

Eligibility[edit]

To get started:

  • Completion of the quest Jingly Dangler is required.
  • All the Mog Gardens gathering activities must have reached rank 4 (or their combined rank total needs to be at least 20 Verification Needed).

Once the requirements have been met, speaking with Green Thumb Moogle should begin the Release the Fleece quest. Once the quest line, ending with Cry Not, Caretaker, is completed, Monster Rearing will be fully unlocked.

  • Everyone will start with a sheep named "LittleSheep".

Ranks[edit]

To unlock ranks, key items are required as follows:

Rank 2 - "Sakura and the Magic Spoon"

  • More creatures will become available
  • The quest Chacharoon's Cheer will become available.
    • Completion of the quest will allow for the "cheer" bonuses to be activated.

Rank 3 - "Sakura and the Fountain"

  • Even more creature will become available.
  • The quest Trial of the Chacharoon will become available.
    • Completion allows for a maximum of two creatures to be raised simultaneously.
  • Bastore Sardine is added to the list of items sold by Green Thumb Moogle.

Rank 4 - "Sakura and the Magicked Net"

  • Again more creatures will become available.

Rank 5 - "Sakura's Excellent Adventure"

  • Further additions to the creature roster, and a maximum of three can be raised at once.
  • The quest Doctor Chacharoon will become available.
    • Completion allows for a maximum of three creatures to be raised simultaneously.
  • San d'Orian Carrot is added to the list of items sold by Green Thumb Moogle.

Rank 6 - "Sakura and the Cactus Corps"

  • More creatures added.

Rank 7 - "Sakura and the Holy Grail"

  • Once more again, more creatures will be available.
  • The quest Rowing Together will become available.
    • Completion allows for a maximum of three creatures to be raised simultaneously.

Monster Management[edit]

Chacharoon will provide the following options dealing with monster management and more.

Raise a new creature[edit]

This can be done once per day (Earth time) at first, twice at rank 5, and thrice at rank 7 (or rank 6 Verification Needed), but only if the maximum number of monsters has not already been reached (4 at rank 7).

Rank 1 Rank 2 Rank 3 Rank 4 Rank 5 Rank 6 Rank 7
Sheep Cockatrice Dhalmel Coeurl Bugard Bomb Sabotender
Rabbit Raptor Sea Monk Buffalo Adamantoise Behemoth Dragon
Treant Eft Uragnite Slime
Lizard Crab Mandragora
Colibri

Monsters will start with names automatically picked from a set list, but can be given custom names as well.

  • The list of names is at least partially the same as is for Chocobo Racing.
  • Certain combinations of letters are not allowed, such as ones forming profane words, or "ad", and "gm".

Choose a parenting style[edit]

In the Personal Growth parental style, monsters will gradually mature every day, though their mood will gradually degrade.

  • All new monsters received are set to this style by default.

In the Enjoying the Moment parental style, the monster's growth level will remain constant, even when fed.

Part with your creature[edit]

Choosing to Send it back home will yield gil and up to 4 Mog Gardens items, depending on maturation level or player interaction.

Choosing to Put it down will yield 1 to 3 items tagged as "Put down" in the Collect Items table.

Change rearing priority[edit]

When more than one creature is being reared, this allows for specifying which one of them will appear in the Mog Gardens area.

View "Boss's Advice"[edit]

Provides information with regards to monster rearing.

Discuss a cheering effect[edit]

As mementos are obtained, Chacharoon gains access to new "cheers", which will provide various bonuses and unlock items Green Thumb Moogle will sell (only one cheer may be active at a time, but the items available will remain once unlocked).

Activating a cheer effect will consume a varying amount of shining stars, depending on the cheer selected.

Move to a different location[edit]

Provides the exit Mog Gardens options, with the addition of the Mog Gardens itself.

Monster Care[edit]

A monster's mood may be between "succumbing to darkness" and "face beams with the light of pure contentment". It is somewhat difficult to achieve these extreme states, however.

A monster that is "succumbing to darkness" will render all Mog Garden activities unusable, except for the Flotsam. Only the following actions may be performed on a monster under this status effect:

  • Use moogle magic to improve the monster's mood. Requires an expenditure of Shining Stars, with the number increasing per use.
  • The monster may be put down.

The monster's growth level is represented by 3 stars (with an open star denoting one-half).

  • At midnight (JST), a monster on the Personal Growth parental style will grow by 0-0.5 stars. A baby monster at 3 stars will have a chance to evolve into its normal adult form, starting again at 0.5 star.
  • Monsters with three stages of growth typically do not evolve into their third forms without the use of specific feed.

Daily Activities[edit]

Monsters can be interacted with and fed once per day, with an effect to their mood and form.

Interacting[edit]

Most monsters respond to a certain interaction with "strongly resonates", but some only with "not worthless" while others prefer to not be interacted with at all.

  • An interaction during the "pure contentment" status that normally "strongly resonates" with a monster will yield a Shining Star.
  • Even monsters that normally do not like to be interacted with at all, will respond with "strongly resonates" during the "pure contentment" status.
  • The "pure contentment" status may remain for at least a few days.

Feeding[edit]

A fed monster will grow faster than an unfed one, but still no more than 0-0.5 star per day.

Most monsters will "squirm uncontrollably" when fed with a specific food after reaching a certain growth level (commonly 1.5 stars, but no later than 2.5 stars), indicating they have a chance of changing their form to the next level.

  • Should the monster "shudder violently" instead, it will have evolved (changing areas is required for it to actually come into effect).
  • Some monsters have two such feeds, from which one will cause it to evolve into its typical adult form, and the other into its adult variant form.

Evolution by feeding can be achieved while on the Enjoying the Moment parental style. This can be useful for forcing a variant evolution to occur.

Adult monsters can continue growing until they reach 3 full stars (again). At this point, the Personal Growth parental style will have no effect on either its mood or its growth.

Collecting Items[edit]

Items can be collected from monsters once per day, which will always "not go over well", except for during the "pure contentment" status.

Mementos[edit]

Interacting with, feeding, or collecting items from a baby monster has a chance of yielding its memento starting at around 2 stars of growth. With an adult monster, this may start around 1.5 stars of growth.

An adult monster will occasionally grant the memento of its baby version if it has not been obtained already, but a third stage monster will never grant its second stage memento. It can be helpful to put the monster on Enjoying the Moment to ensure they will not be missed.
