Historical Information[edit]

Kogarasumaru.jpg

Atypical among other members of the great katana tradition, the tip of this blade has been forged to hold two edges, one fashioned in the traditional eastern style, and the other in that of the west. Legend proclaims that the blade was presented to Balrahn after his defeat of the nefarious enemy general Ogarasu in an epic struggle.

Background[edit]

A unique tachi measuring 62.8cm long, likely forged by Amakuni in the 8th century. In the same time period, two other swords in the Kogarasu Zukuri family were made. In Japanese mythology it is said that a shamanic crow brought the sword from the heavens to Emperor Kanmu.

It is remarkable for being a bridge between the Japanese ken (based on the Chinese straight sword) and later tachi and katana. Unlike tachi, both sides are edged and the tip is symmetrical, except for about 20cm of the trailing edge near the hilt which remains rounded. The ingame model is a faithful reproduction of the real sword.
