Avatar Information[edit]

A gigantic wolf summoned by Karaha-Baruha during the Great War, whose power was unleashed in a last-ditch effort to drive back the Shadow Lord's armies from the gates of Windurst. Fenrir aids the summoner with his command over darkness and abilities related to phases of the moon.

Summoners can acquire the ability to summon the avatar Fenrir by defeating Fenrir Prime in the quest The Moonlit Path. The battle is only suitable for a party level 65 or higher.

Historical Background[edit]

Fenrir was the child of Loki and Angrboda, the Norse god of mischief and a giantess respectively, though he himself has the form of a giant wolf. He was tricked by Odin (Monster) and the other gods by allowing them to tie him up with a magic rope crafted by the dwarves (out of such impossible materials as a woman's beard and the sound of a cat's footsteps) only if the god Tyr (the god of Justice) would put one of his hands into his mouth as a sign of good faith that they would release him, this being the latest of several "See if you can break this rope/chain" challenges. When Fenrir confessed he could not and wasn't freed, he snapped off the hand of Tyr's swordarm at the wrist. According to the myth, during Ragnarok he will free himself and devour Odin, only to be then killed by Vidar, Odin's son.
