Historical Background[edit]
Hototogisu is the Japanese name for the bird also known as the Lesser Cuckoo, Little Cuckoo, or Japanese Cuckoo (Cuculus poliocephalus). It is found in the Indian subcontinent, Japan, and Southeast Asia. In Japan, it is among the most popular songbirds due to the sound of its song, resulting in Japanese poets writing of the bird frequently. The Hototogisu was a symbol of early Summer as it was considered to mark the start of Summer. Legends portrayed the bird as singing until it spit up blood (that feature may have something to do with the Hototogisu name being given to a katana).
