Historical Background[edit]
In European folklore, Olifant (also spelled Oliphant) was the legendary ivory trumpet or horn of Roland in The Song of Roland. Roland uses it summon help from the Franks in fighting the Saracens, but due to his code of honor, which obliged him to fight despite being considerably outnumbered, he only used it when it was too late. Roland and all of his men were killed before reinforcements could arrive. The history of the Olifant explains why the FFXI horn has the unique effect of enhancing an instrument skill outside of the Nation-controlled area.
