Historical Background[edit]
Prefect (from the Latin praefectus: "make in front", i.e., put in charge) is a magisterial title of varying definition. In ancient Rome the title was used in a whole host of military, police, judicial, religious, and civil prefects. In the middle-ages præfectus was used to refer to various officers—administrative, military, judicial, etc.—usually alongside a more precise term in the vernacular. In the modern day prefects can still be found in some ecclesiastical, academic, and law enforcement positions.
