Historical Background[edit]

In Icelandic folklore, the Nickur (also called Ninnir, Hnikur) is a water monster which appears as a magnificent white horse with its hooves pointing in reverse. If anyone attempted to ride this horse, it would gallop into the water and drown the rider.
