Historical Background[edit]
In Early Modern Norwegian folklore (16th-18th Century), it is a gigantic sea monster said to reside off the coast of Norway and Iceland in the North Sea or northern Atlantic Ocean. It was described as being as large as a small island. When it would dive back into the ocean, it would create a giant whirlpool which could suck any ship down with it. The Kraken was usually depicted as a giant octopus with its tentacles wrapped all around a ship. Kraken is the definitive article of krake, which means "twisted" or some sickly animal in Norwegian. It even included as an organism in Carolus Linneaus' Systema Naturae (1735), a taxonomic index of all organisms from which scientific nomenclature and taxonomy were inspired, however later editions excluded the Kraken. The Kraken was also the name of an 1830 poem by Alfred Tennyson, also about the creature.
