Historical Background[edit]

Capricorn is traditionally the tenth constellation out of 12 in the Zodiac. It represents a half-goat half-fish creature (its front half is a goat, its back half is the tail end of a fish) or a goat. It is an Earth-element sign and a Cardinal sign (signs considered dynamic and able to initiate things). Capricorn governs the 10th House (rules one's position or standing in society, public image, profession, reputation) and is ruled by the celestial body Saturn (the outermost planet known according to ancient astronomy, at the limits of the solar system). Capricornus is a dim constellation (the second-dimmest Zodiac constellation) bound by Sagittarius, Aquarius, Piscis Austrinus, Aquila, Microscopium. Its named stars are (Alpha to Delta): Algedi, Dabih, Nashira, Deneb Algedi. The constellation is located in a part of the night sky called The Sea (an area filled with several aquatic-themed constellations). Traditionally, people born from December 21 (or December 22, depending on when the Winter Solstice falls) to January 19 are considered Capricorns. Capricorn is Latin for "horned goat".

The constellation was depicted as a goat-fish creature as far back as the Mesopotamian civilizations. They viewed it as representing Ea/Enki, who emerged from the sea and brought civilization, culture, and writing to humanity. In Greek mythology, this constellation is said to have two origins. The first is it represents the god Pan (who is a Satyr, a half-goat, half-man creature), who transformed his lower half into a fish to escape the monster Typhon. The second is it represents Amaltheia, the goat which suckled the top god Zeus when he was an infant and whose horn was broken off to become the Cornucopia (Horn of Plenty). Generally, the symbolism of the goat is said to represent the Sun's ascent out of darkness (the Winter Solstice being the time with the shortest daylength and longest night as well as the farthest south the Sun sets).
