Historical Background[edit]
A toadstool is commonly used to refer to mushrooms (fungi of the Division Basidiomycota). It originated in the English language as a word for inedible (e.g. poisonous mushrooms). Toads were associated with poison in the Middle Ages and stool was an archaic term for a mushroom’s cap, thus “toadstool”. Another possible origin is from the occasional habit of frogs and toads to sit atop mushrooms. The first recording of the word toadstool is in 1398.
