Historical Background[edit]

A creature from folklore in northern England (specifically Lancashire). A giant black dog the size of a cow or a phantom cow with saucer-shaped eyes, depending on the source (the latter seems to be a misinterpretation). It was considered a portent of death. Like many of its other Black Dog counterparts, Barghest, Capelthwaite, Padfoot, Mauthe Doog, it haunted lonely roads. It was commonly feared, but was noted for occasionally being benevolent. It was also called Gytrash, Trash or Skriker.
