Historical Background[edit]

The Coeurl originates from the science fiction short story "Black Destroyer" by A.E. Van Vogt (published in Astounding magazine, July 1939). The short story was later included as part of a compilation work, The Voyage of the Space Beagle (1950), with 3 other short stories by Van Vogt. It was depicted as a sentient alien panther-like creature with tentacles and psionic capabilities that resided on a planet that houses the ruins of ancient cities.

The Coeurl has appeared in Final Fantasy II, IV, VII, VIII, IX, X, X-2, XI, XII and Crystal Chronicles.
