Historical Background[edit]

In Hindu and Buddhist folklore, Apsaras are "cloud dancers", female spirits which inhabit the clouds. They can change their shape at will. There are 26 Apsaras total, each representing a different type of performing art (similar to the Muses from Greek mythology). They are said to rule over luck and fortune in games. One of their roles was to bring heroes slain in battle to a heavenly afterlife, where they would serve as their wife there. Lower Apsaras (also called Vrikshakas) were nature spirits which lured people to their deaths.
