Historical Background
"Sattva", or Sattwa, literally means existence or reality. It is a Sanskrit word that refers to the quality of goodness, orderliness, clarity, purity, and a healthy calmness. Sattva is linked to Vishnu the Preserver in the Hindu Trimurti. Only through Sattva can one attain heaven. Of the three gunas in Samkhya, sāttvika "pure", rājasika "dim", and tāmasika "dark", it is the highest.
