Historical Background[edit]

In Eastern Slavic folklore, the Ovinnik was a type of Domovoi. It was a malevolent 'barn spirit', found residing in the threshing barn (a 2 story building with a furnace used to dry grain). The Ovinnik would burn down the threshing barn by torching the grain. To appease him, peasants offered him roosters or the last sheaf. The Ovinnik was depicted as a large black cat with burning eyes and unkempt fur. It made the sounds of a dog though. Another type of Domovoi was the Chlevnik.
