Healing

The act of resting to regain HP and MP. Triggered by the /heal command (or other means, depending on your method of game control input), this is the primary way to recover HP and MP in between battles. HP/MP only starts to recover once 20 seconds of continuous resting have elapsed, and happens again every 10 seconds thereafter, with the amounts of HP/MP recovered increasing with every 10 second "tick", until the healing process is interrupted by either the player or enemy action. While healing, the character adopts a different stance and becomes unable to move or take any other actions.

Disease and Plague prevent the character from gaining any HP or MP while healing. A character who is taking damage (by Poison/Dia/Bio or some other DoT effect, being hit for more than 0, having an offensive spell cast on them, etc.) cannot heal, and will have their healing interrupted; Stoneskin will prevent this interruption if it absorbs all of the damage. 10% TP (not 10% of the current TP) is lost for each tick that the player rests. Note: Since the March 2007 update, this TP loss can be negated if the character has Signet active and is healing in an area subject to Conquest, or has Sigil active and is healing in an area on the Campaign map (WotG expansion areas). There are several items and Job Traits which can increase the amount of HP or MP regained while healing.

Healing is also a term used synonymously to mean Curing (the act of restoring HP to yourself or party members through the use of Healing Magic or other means). To avoid confusion, many players typically refer to the /heal style of healing simply as "resting".
