Historical Background
In the Roman army, the Signifer was the soldier who was the standard-bearer for a Century in the Legion. The Signifer was responsible for handling the finances of the Garrison. They would keep records of all financial transactions (receipts) as well as manage all the accounts of everyone in the Legion. They would be the soldier who paid each soldier's salary and arrange for pensions or burial funds. Signifer is Latin for "standard-bearer".
