Zantetsuken

Inflicts Death on enemies within area of effect.

Technicals[edit]

Avatar: Odin (Dark)

Cost: Upon use it consumes 100% of your MP. Damage dealt to NMs is based on the MP used and the current HP of the target.

Level: 75

Description[edit]

Effect Duration: Instantaneous

Battle Application: Magic Burst

Damage Type: N/A (Monsters), Magic (Notorious Monsters)

Additional Notes:

  • Against normal monsters, Zantetsuken inflicts Death.
    • Not 100% accurate. Accuracy decreases as the number of enemies increases.
    • Inflicts Death on enemy players in Ballista and on Charmed players. Ballista players may avoid instant death by resting or kneeling.
  • Against Notorious Monsters, Zantetsuken deals Conal Darkness damage instead of causing Death.
    • Damage is based both on the summoner's remaining MP % and the current HP of the NM. Damage decreases as the number of NMs increases.
    • Zantetsuken's damage can be decreased or nullified by NMs with high magic resistance. It was resisted completely (0 damage) by Hydra with magical shield up, as well as Jailer of Temperance (which has innate 100% magic resistance). Zantetsuken dealt significantly less damage relative to Jailer of Love's remaining HP.
    • Can do a maximum of 9999 damage before modifiers.
  • Mana Cede can be used, if timed right, to enhance its damage further.

Macro Syntax[edit]

  • /ja "Astral Flow" <me>
  • /ma "Odin" <t>

Odin can only be summoned if Astral Flow is active.

Enemy Version[edit]

  • Family: Odin
  • Utsusemi/Blink absorb: Ignores shadows
  • Range: 15' radial (around Odin)
  • Notes: Odin uses this ability at 10%, as an Astral Flow-style attack. Players in range can use /kneel or /heal to avoid instant K.O. Before using this ability, Odin gives a warning monologue:
"Mine obsidian blade shall split atwain the threads of thy future..."
"...whilst its crimson fuller shalt channel the lifeblood of thy past."
"Now wail as thy soul is bestrewn across the plains of Valhalla!"

Historical Background[edit]

All of Odin's abilities have names rooted in Norse Mythology and usually refer to one of the many names of Odin; this one however is the obvious exception. Zantetsuken (斬鉄剣) is a Japanese word combined from 3 characters, together meaning "steel-cutting sword". A more literal interpretation would yield "steel-killing sword", implying the blade is so strong that even steel would be defeated by it. It is Odin's signature instant kill move from other Final Fantasy games.
