Historical Background[edit]

A zanbato (also spelled zanmato, zanbatou, zambatou, zhanmadao) was a large Japanese and Chinese weapon with a wide blade and a pole-like handle which had to be held with two hands. It was supposed to be able to slay a horse in one blow, thus disabling a cavalry rider. The Zanbato and Zanmato differeted slightly in form, but generally resembled one another. Zanbato is Japanese for "horse-slaying sword" or "horse-chopping sword". Zanmato is Chinese for "horse-cutting blade".

In Final Fantasy VII, Cloud's Buster Sword is said to resemble a Zanbato. In Final Fantasy X, Auron's swords are said to be large enough to be considered a Zanbato as well. Neither bore the name Zanbato, though.
