Historical Background[edit]

In the Hindu religion, Vishnu is a god who is a part of the trimurti (holy trinity) and his role is that of preserver, the who maintains and protects the existence of the universe. He is described as pervading everything and not bound by time, space, or substance. He is described as a crowned man having dark blue skin and 4 arms, one holding a conch (Shankha), one holding a mace (Kaumodaki), one holding a sword, and one holding a sharp disc (Sudarshana Chakra). He also has a bow, Sarnga and a jewel (Kaustubha) around his neck. His consort is Lakshmi and his mount (means of transportation) is the Garuda.

He is known for having 10 avatars (physical incarnations): Matsya (half-man half-fish which warned Manu to escape the coming Flood), Kurma (half-man half-turtle who supported a mountain on his back in an ocean in order that the gods might churn the ocean), Varaha (half-man half-boar who fought Hiranyaksha for 1000 years), Narasimha (half-man half-lion who fought Hiranyakashipu), Vamana (a human dwarf who tricked Asuran king Mahabali to give up his kingdom), Parashurama (axe-wielding man who fought the 1000-armed king Kartavirya), Rama (legendary Indian king who fought the 10-headed Ravana, ruler of Lanka and king of the rakshasas), Krishna (figure worshipped as a deity in his own right and who appears frequently in Hindu scripture), Buddha (founder of Buddhism), and Kalki (a man riding a white horse who will destroy all evil and corruption at the end of the Kali Yuga).
