Historical Background[edit]
A type of dueling sword used toward the end of the sixteenth century. It was named after the town in France where it was made. Minus cutting edges, the slender, diamond-shaped blade was designed exclusively for thrusting. Because of the way it was constructed, the verdun could be lengthened dramatically without destroying the weapon's rigidity or increasing its weight. These swords were so long that they could not be worn. Their owners had them carried by servants who walked behind them.
