Historical Background[edit]
In Eastern Slavic (Russian, Ukranian, Belorussian) folklore, the granddaughter of Father Frost. She appears in several Russian fairy tales. In one story, she falls in love with a shepherd, but she cannot love because her heart is cold. Her mother (Spring) takes pity on her and allows her to love. When she is able to love, her heart grows warm and she melts. In another story, an elderly couple make a young girl out of snow. Other young girls invite her to play with them. One time, when they are walking in the woods, they make a small fire and decide to take turns jumping over it. When the Snow Maiden jumps over it, she evaporated into a cloud of vapor. Her name in Russian is Snegurochka
