Reputation, also known as fame, is a term used to describe how well-known and respected a character is to NPCs. Your reputation level varies according to city; you may be well-known in Windurst but a nobody in Bastok. Your reputation level determines which quests you can start; NPCs are reluctant to trust a complete stranger with any but the most trivial of tasks. You gain reputation by completing quests, which in turn opens up more quests that you can do to earn more reputation. With a good reputation, the NPCs will feel comfortable asking you to do difficult tasks with correspondingly greater rewards. Also, merchants tend to offer better prices to you when you have a high reputation, in recognition of your services. The formula used to determine prices based on fame is a complex one; in general, the range between the lowest and highest starts at approximately 40% for items below 1000 gil median price, and reduces to approximately 20% for higher priced items. There may be exceptions to this rough formula.
Each city has a Reputation Checker, listed below, that will give you an idea of how famous you are in that city. The speech they give varies according to your reputation level; these are also listed below.
If you need reputation fast, there are some popular Quick Reputation quests that you can do to quickly raise your reputation.
The reputation acquired in any one city will, in most cases, increase your reputation in at least one other city.
When you speak to the following NPCs, the speech they give varies, according to your reputation level.

|1||<Name>? that's a name I haven't heard before. You have to understand, this is a harsh world we live in. People don't have the luxury of becoming best buddies with each and every stranger who finds his/her way to this camp. But take heart. Learn your way around, show that you have something to offer the cause, and people will come to trust you in time, I'm sure.||<Name>? Never heard of him/her. Oh, that's you? You'll have to forgive me. These days one stranger wandering into our camp looks much like the nextaru. Our people might seem a bit distant, but that's part and parcel-warcel of living in these harsh times. Help them in their struggle and they'll learn to trust you in good time.||Hmm... <Name>, you say? No, never heard of that name. But do good for the survivors, and they shall come to know you. Once you have their trust, they will more readily turn to your help. Just keep your head down, and your day shall come.|
|2||<Name>? Hmmm... I recall hearing that a rookie by that name was bungling about camp, trying his/her best to be helpful, but mostly just getting in the way. When you're struggling for your life, you can't always give a newcomer the time and patience they deserve. It would seem your heart is in the right place, though. Keep up your efforts, and people will come to appreciate you before long.||<Name>-Bo<name>? Was that the third minister of the Manustery? Oh, I'm Sorry. That was you, wasn't it? You're not a complete stranger-wanger these days, but I fear you haven't made much of an impression. Keep working at it, though, and your day will come.||<Name>...? Hmm... |3||Ah so you're <Name>. Yes, I hear your name here and there these days. Seems that some of our veterans were pleasantly surprised that you're finally making yourself useful. Keep it up, and they may even consider you a trusted comrade someday.||Wait, Don't tell me... <Name>, Was it? I've finally-winally managed to put a face to the name. Why, I heard a conversation about you just the other day. "A bit of a bumbler-wumbler, but i suppose he means well..." they said. It may not sound like much, but you're on the right track. Now is no time to rest in your efforts!||Ah, <Name>. That is a name I often hear. People speak well of you! Your deeds for the folk battling here have earned you much honor.|
|4||Well, if it isn't <Name>. Did you know that you're a fairly popular topic around camp these days? It's not often that a new recruit makes an impression so quickly. I daresay you're well on your way to being a valued member of the resistance. But this is no time to rest on your laurels!||Oh, hullo there, <Name>. Keep fighting the good fight!||Well, if it isn't <name>! Don't go getting a swelly-welled head, but you've got yourself the makings of your own little fan club these days. Just goes to show that people appreciataru the good deeds you've done. But I have a feeling we haven't seen the limits of what you can do. Keep showing us what you've got!||Ah, <Name>. You are famous among the community of survivors! Of you no ill is spoken. Give to the community and it will give to you, no?|
|6||If it isn't <Name>, <Hero/Heroine> of the resistance! Why, to think that when I first saw you, you were just a no-name new recruit who couldn't tell a martello from a hole in the ground! Now look at you! Why, people talk of you as if you've single-handedly restored hope to our people. Continue to fight with us, <Name> In this dark age, we need every hero we can get.||<name>! What a rare treataru! Why, I hear your name everywhere I go these days. People can't stop talking about how much easier their lives have been since you showed up. No surprise to me, of course. Why, since the first day I spotty-wotted you, I knew this day would come!|| ≺Name≻! I would venture that most who've taken refuge in the plateau have heard your name!

Some people use the "Rice Ball" method to estimate their current Norg/Tenshodo Reputation. To use this method, check the price of Rice Balls, and compare it to this table, allowing you to estimate your Norg/Tenshodo Reputation without travelling to Norg.
|Fame Level||Rice Ball Price|
For each 1 gil price reduction you need to achieve, you could turn in 16 Yagudo Necklace to Nanaa Mihgo. So for example people can usually get the quest The Sahagin's Stash for Utsusemi: Ichi at 154 or 153 price. If your current price was 161, you would need to turn in 16 x (161-154) = 112 Yagudo Necklaces. Each time you complete the quest Mihgo's Amigo you use 4 necklaces. In the process of getting the Norg Fame by completing the Mihgo's Amigo quest a player will usually net about 15k gil if all the necklaces are farmed.
