Limbus is a mysterious dimension that lies between Vana'diel, Promyvion, and Lumoria. It is accessible from the celestial realm of Al'Taieu. Similar to Dynamis, these areas are intended as a challenge for advanced players at the highest levels. Items can be obtained here that can be redeemed for upgraded Artifact Armor and Rare/Ex equipment.

Limbus is comprised of two areas: Temenos and Apollyon, each of them leading to a separate a boss fight with a prototype biotechnological weapon. Items obtained from these bosses can be redeemed for pieces of two high-level sets of armor from the Near East.

[edit] Entering Limbus

To enter the Limbus battlefields, one must currently have the Chains of Promathia mission Garden of Antiquity active or completed. This is needed in order to access Al'Taieu, from which Limbus may be entered.

Furthermore, two key items are required for each character entering:

The Northern Al'Taieu is divided into three areas, each accessible via home points and/or a Dimensional Portal at either the Crag of Dem, the Crag of Mea, or the Crag of Holla. Each of these areas in Al'Taieu provides access to a lobby for a set of Limbus battlefields, and is the home of the Aw'euvhi that provide the key cards required for the areas entered from that specific section.

  • Upon defeating one of the Aw'euvhi, the whole party/alliance currently within the area (regardless of whether they have been knocked out or not) will obtain the key item.
  • The cards may also be obtained by interacting with the ???-targets near the entrances, although it will only be granted to the one doing so.

After the entire party/alliance has obtained both of the required key items, the Limbus area can be entered by interacting with the Swirling Vortex (Apollyon) or the Matter Diffusion Module (Temenos). The Sentinel Column (Apollyon) and Scanning Device (Temenos) can be used to check the status of each battlefield.

  • Trading the appropriate chip(s) to the Swirling Vortex/Matter Diffusion Module will allow for entry to the otherwise inaccessible areas as listed below.

All characters in the party/alliance will be unable to enter a different area until the "hum" stops, which happens when the battlefield that was selected is cleared, or all the characters are otherwise removed from the area.

  • It is possible to form parties/alliances after having entered different Apollyon or Temenos battlefields (but not Apollyon and Temenos at the same time), and everyone will be able to lot on the items from each as they are considered to be within the same area.

[edit] Limbus Rules

  • Maximum Party Size: Eighteen (18) characters may enter the same area at the same time.
  • Time: Alliances will begin most areas with a time limit of thirty (30) minutes (Earth time), save for areas in Central Temenos (45 minutes) and Central Apollyon as well as Central Temenos - 4th Floor (60 minutes). These limits may be extended by opening certain chests throughout each route.
  • Entering: Upon entering, both key items are lost. These areas are much like any other battlefield in that upon leaving them, they can not be re-entered after having left the area in one way or the other (having lost connection to the game is not considered leaving the area, but the time allotted will keep counting down).
    • If someone has not entered when the first enemy is engaged in battle, or made active in some other way, they will not be able to enter at all.
    • Proceeding to any of the areas within will not be hindered by engaging enemies, as it does with the initial entry.
  • Re-entry: Twenty (20) hours (Earth time) must have passed after having purchased the Key Item Cosmo-Cleanse to be able to purchase it again.
    • Being in the possession of Key Item Rhapsody in Mauve will lower this time to one (1) hour (Earth time).
  • Clearing: Upon opening the area's final treasure chest, the battlefield will be cleared, and all the player characters will automatically exit into the lobby while the resulting treasure will wait in the treasure pool.
  • K.O.: Experience Points will be lost in the event of being knocked out. It is not possible to gain experience points through defeating enemies in these areas.
  • Trading chips: Once chip(s) are traded to gain access for an advanced area, those chips lose their power, and become useless. Chips used to gain entry to the boss areas, Central Apollyon and Central Temenos - 4th Floor, need to be traded by one and the same character at once.

Upon entry to an area that requires chips, the one trading the chip(s) will receive a message stating "The light in the <color> chip has grown dim.", at which point the chip mentioned will become useless and can be thrown away.

[edit] Armoury Crates

Armoury Crates are scattered throughout each Limbus area. The rules for their behavior vary in each different area.

Contents of chests can usually be determined by their color, as follows:

  • Blue with Gold lining (Time): Time Extension (5, 10, or 15 minutes)
  • Dark Brown with Gold lining (Loot): Items (AF+1 materials, Ancient Beastcoins, area access chips, and Synthesis Materials)
  • Light Brown with Silver lining (Restore): HP/MP recovery and all Job Ability timers reset (including 2-hours)

In certain areas, Armoury Crates may transform into Mimics (SW Apollyon - 3rd Floor), while others may trigger enemies to be spawned (Central Temenos - 4th Floor). In other areas, opening a chest causes other crates and/or enemies to disappear, forcing one to choose a single chest per level.

[edit] Rewards

Limbus offers a breadth of rewards, based largely on trade of items obtained from enemies and Armoury Crates in the battlegrounds. These include the ability to upgrade your Artifact Armor into Artifact Armor +1, pieces of Homam and Nashira armor, and items purchasable from Sagheera using Ancient Beastcoins.

[edit] Artifact Armor +1

You can upgrade your Artifact Armor by trading it along with various items and Ancient Beastcoins to Sagheera in Port Jeuno. She requires one item that drops in Apollyon and one from Temenos; this is the same for the entire set. She also requires a crafted item and 15-40 Ancient Beastcoins, depending on the piece.

Trade her the Ancient Beastcoins first, then, in a separate trade, the rest of the items. Wait until the next Conquest tally and then talk to her again to receive your AF+1. The upgraded pieces are all Level 74. If you wish to get the original AF back, you will need to restart the AF quests by talking to Vingijard in Lower Jeuno.

[edit] Nashira and Homam Armor

The Armoury Crates left behind by Proto-Omega, Proto-Ultima, Arch-Omega and Arch-Ultima following their defeat contain parts from the defeated weapon. Wilhelm in Mhaura, a representative of The Brugaire Consortium, is eager to learn about such biotechnological weapons. Those who give him parts of Omega and Ultima will be rewarded with the following pieces of level 75 and 90 respectively. There is no delay in obtaining these items.

[edit] Historical Background

Limbus is the Latin word for Limbo, meaning "edge" or "boundary".

Limbo is a word used in general for being stuck with nowhere to go until something else happens, but it has its origins with Christian belief (Roman Catholic exclusively). In Catholic legend, Limbo is a realm where the virtuous humans who died before the resurrection of Jesus Christ reside and where unbaptised infants who die reside. This is the realm where souls exist which cannot go to Hell for they have committed no sins or lived virtuous lives, but they cannot go to Heaven because they are not a part of the Catholic faith. There are names for each of the 2 Limbos: Limbus Patrum (Limbo of the Fathers, where the virtuous Pagans reside) and Limbus Infantium (Limbo of the Children, where unbaptised infants reside). It is not a part of official doctrine (unlike Purgatory). In Medieval literature, specifically Dante's Divine Comedy, Limbo is the First Circle of Hell.
