Historical Background[edit]
Material which originated on two different mythological animals, the first being the Golden-Fleeced Ram, the second being the Golden Sheep. The Golden-Fleeced Ram (Krios Khrysomallos [Latin Aries Chrysomallus]) was a mythological ram who could talk and fly. This ram rescued the 2 children of the goddess Nephele, who were about to be sacrificed and asked the children to sacrifice himself in their place. His selfless act got him immortalized in the stars as the constellation Aries. His golden fleece was placed in a holy grove protected by Ares, the god of war. This fleece would be the one sought after by Jason and the Argonauts.
The Golden Sheep (Meloi Khryseoi) were a flock of very aggressive and poisonous sheep with golden fleeces. Psyche was also ordered by Aphrodite to get a golden fleece from these sheep as one of the many labors she must perform to get immortality Their inclusion in that story is a literary play on words, since meloi khryseoi means both "golden sheep" and "golden apples" (Golden Apples are an icon in Greek mythology which can give immortality).
