Historical Background[edit]

The goedendag (also godendac, godendard, godendart) was a weapon originally used by the militias of Medieval Flanders in the 14th. Century. It was a wooden staff roughly five feet long with a diameter of roughly four inches. It was wider at one end, and at this end a sharp metal spike was inserted by a tang[1]. Essentially, a goedendag was a combination of a club with a spear.

The name goedendag derives from the Flemish, usually derived in English sources from "Good Day" [1] but the phrase also means "good dagger", which may be as significant.[2] However, the term is found only in French sources, while the Flemings themselves referred to the weapon as a pinned staff (gepinde staf). The plancon a picot is a related, if not identical, weapon. (from Wikipedia)

In dutch language (The Netherlands) Goeden Dag means Good Day, as more used in Hello rather than Having a good day or saying goodbye.
