Historical Background[edit]

Eotyrannus is an extinct genus first described in 2001. Eotyrannus is a 4-5m (12-15 feet) long tyrannosaur-like dinosaur which lived during the Early Cretaceous Period (146-100 million years ago). It was considered an early, primitive version of the Tyrannosaur, being much smaller than the well-known dinosaur. It predated the Tyrannosaur by 80 million years. Only one species is known, Eotyrannus lengi. It was discovered on the Isle of Wight in the British Isles around May 2001. Eotyrannus means “dawn/early tyrant”.

Of all the mythological and historical creatures added to Final Fantasy XI, Eotyrannus is one of the the most historically recent, 2001 CE. It was discovered only 1 year before the launch of FFXI and only 7 months before the launch of FFXI's original Beta. This is also the fastest turnaround between the source of a monster, item, etc. and its implementation in the game. Eotyrannus was added in April 2003 with the Rise of the Zilart expansion, merely 1 year and 11 months after its discovery. Tsaagan beat out Eotyrannus in 2009 for the most historically recent creature in Vana'diel.
