Historical Background[edit]

In Greek mythology, dryads were nymphs of oak trees. Nymphs were female nature spirits of various aspects of nature (others: oceanids [nymphs of oceans], nereids [nymphs of seas], naiads [nymphs of freshwater], oreads [nymphs of mountains]). Only in the 20th century did Dryads get reinterpreted to be tree spirits of all types of trees, not just oak trees. Dryads harmed any mortals who would kill trees in the forests or groves without making proper offerings. Meliae were the nymphs for ash trees, daphnaie were the nymphs for laurel trees, leuce were nymphs for white poplar trees and aigeiroi were nymphs for black poplar trees. Dryad is Greek for "of the tree" (feminine).
