Historical Background[edit]
The term Decurion has meanings both in the military and in the administration of the the Roman Empire. In the military, a decurion was a cavalry officer in command of a troop of thirty soldiers. A Decurion was also, in the first century AD, the commander of a Decuria, an eight man group sleeping in the same tent. In administration, decurions were the most powerful political figures at the local level. They were responsible for public contracts, religious rituals, entertainment, and ensuring order. Perhaps most importantly to the imperial government, they also supervised local tax collection.
