Historical Background[edit]

In Medieval European bestiaries, the Chichevache is a cow with a human face that feeds off of virtuous (i.e. obedient, faithful) women. According to legend, it is emaciated, appearing as flesh-covered bones because of a scarcity of such women. It is primarily mentioned in Chaucer's The Canterbury Tales (1390s). Chichevache is French for "thin cow".
