Opinionated Guides vs Factual Guides?[edit]

Something that's been bothering me for a while is that a lot of the articles in this category are guides but aren't opinionated, so the disclaimer on the category page seems to detract from the credibility of the text in articles such as FFXI:Userboxes, Immigration NPC, Category:Relic Weapons, and Category:Assault. Maybe there should be some sort of distinction between different kinds of guides? --Ichthyos 16:01, 11 August 2006 (EDT)

I kind of like both being in the same category. The {{guide}} template is really what differentiates fact vs. opinion. I do agree that the guides category should probably have a better description of what is contained therein, what the differences are and when to use the {{guide}} (and now {{guide-subpage}}). --Gahoo 16:09, 11 August 2006 (EDT)

EDIT: And we could discuss changing the language of {{guide}} somewhat to change the first two sentences. --Gahoo 16:11, 11 August 2006 (EDT)

Maybe we should have two different ones?? One for Factual ones like Ichthyos said, reguarding Category:Assault et al and one for such guides like White Mage Guide by Zero. You still put the Category:Guides at the top of both pages so they show up on the same list regardless...

And with the purposed other change - Having people link their guides to their user pages... I was thinking about two things: First, what about the Pulling the Strings/Black Mage or the Pulling the Strings/Beastmaster Guides... that link off the respective BCNM Guide... Shouldn't that stay there, otherwise no one would really see it... And Second, if we do this change - I think we should make clear what should go as a /user page one and then have one of Admins moderate all new Guides that are made to make sure they follow protocol. --Nynaeve 10:55, 14 September 2006 (EDT)

Obviously everything should still be grouped in Category:Guides, but perhaps we should have a number of different disclaimers? I know certain things warrant disclaimers, and some don't, like walkthroughs. Much with the guides, I've been trying to find a proper setup for BCNM/Battlefield Strategy pages, and I think I've made good headway in my test page and favorite BCNM, Wings of Fury and the resulting subpage Wings of Fury/Strategies. Strategies somewhat fall under the "guide" purview, because they are often personal accounts of how to do something. Since its a fight, what works for one person, may not work for another. This is to differentiate them from quest/mission walkthroughs, which should be considered factual because anyone should be able to follow a walkthrough and succeed. Strategy doesn't really even fall under "opinion" either, as it is based off of an actual working dynamic. Do you think strategy pages, if we separate them like with Wings of Fury, should be listed as guides? Or should there be a separate category for these kind of things? --Chrisjander 10:56, 14 September 2006 (EDT)

I think Category:Guides should contain 2 sub-categories. One for the "factual" guides and one for the "opinionated" guides. Of course, we can come up with better names than that. This would handleded through the templates they use. The templates like {{guide_fact}} will contain which category they belong in, the category definition should not exist within the article itself, but in the template it uses. The template can be further extended to give it the category listing so things like User:Ganiman/Blue Mage Guide will still appear under "B" like {{guide_fact|Blue Mage Guide}}. I think this "revisit" is long overdue. --Ganiman 11:19, 14 September 2006 (EDT)

What about {{Guide-User|Blue Mage Guide}} and {{Guide-Game}}? A user-guide is a guide based largely the user's experiences. A game-guide is largely based on game-based facts. Both will be under the overarching guides category so that category will show all "Guides".

As for the BCNM strategies - I like how Wings of Fury and Wings of Fury/Strategies looks. I think that is a great change. I don't think either page needs a guide flag. If you are looking for BCNM strategy you will be going to that page anyway.

As for the Pulling the Strings subpages. I originally removed the guide flag on all the subpages for Shattering Stars along the same lines. I think it unnecessarily clutters the guides page. IMO the main page should have a guide flag to show that it (or its subpages) contains guide material. But we don't need/want 18 guides showing up for each of these quests. --Gahoo 12:40, 14 September 2006 (EDT)

Could Troubleshooting: Connection Lost be added to this page please? --Drow 06:10, 12 November 2006 (EST)

This page is a mess[edit]

We need to remove the subcategories, or do something to fix the page. It goes A-M, but no matter what I do, I can't get it to go to the "next 200" entries, or get it to view M-Z, etc. Can someone please fix this???

There are well over 200 guides in here by now, and the page is an absolute mess. The alphabetical system for sorting the guides is not really helpful, i think the guides section needs some subcategories. I started on reworking this by making the beastmaster sub category and removed beastmaster guides from the guides category and moved them to the "Beastmaster guide" category, but the next thing that happend was a deletion tag on the category. OK.....

So how do you think you can bundle the guides? I would have said a category for each job would really help a lot, especially looking at these multi page guides... Crafting guides should be bundled too in my opinion. This would mean to remove the Category: Guide - tag from the Template: Guide, and putting in the right subcategories for the guides. It is needed cleanup work in my opinion, but others might, as i have seen, differ. So what do we do? Cheers --Gisselle 16:34, 11 December 2006 (EST)

Next 200 link not working[edit]

This has bothered me for months, can someone fix this? —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Baudelaire (talkcontribs).

It's not broken. Help:FAQ. --User:Chrisjander/Sig 15:41, 16 July 2007 (CDT)

So what's the rationale for hiding the next page of listing from people who aren't signed in? It makes no sense... —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Baudelaire (talkcontribs).

I believe it is a software issue/limitation. --User:Gahoo/Sig 14:27, 14 August 2007 (CDT)

Next 200 Link[edit]

This does not work for me either. I have tried everything but I'm unable to goto any category passed "M". Bitucus 13:34, 24 July 2007 (CDT)

As Chrisjander said above, ?action=purge --Scrollios

Lack of subcatagories[edit]

I'd like to try my luck organizing everything into proper subcatagories, the question is

how do i actually do that?

and

do I need special rights? (ie can any plain user edit catagories/subcatagories at will?) --Themanii 07:29, 13 March 2008 (UTC)
