Category talk:Fishing

I think we need to figure out how to split up fishing gear items (armor, rods, lures, bait, etc) from the fish that are fished up. I would expect to find the fish on the Fishing page, at the bottom like they were recipes. And I would expect to find the rods and armor and bait elsewhere - what happened to the category:Fishing Gear page? I thought that was a good place to put those...or at least have a page that has all the gear/rods/bait listed out. It just seems it would get confusing eventually to have fish and gear and everything mixed together in one big section. Just my thoughts!

thoughts[edit]

Well I don't think fishing really needs 2 categories. The fish themselves will also be categorized as food and materials for the most part. As for rods and bait - i think a chart is sufficient. There are not that many out there and they are not expanded very often. I would prefer we leave it as is.--Gahoo 20:12, 12 Jun 2005 (PDT)

kk[edit]

kk, as long as I know where to put things - I'll just take the rods/bait out of the fishing category at least, just leave the fish in there.

Fishing Skill affects bite rates[edit]

This is rather odd, but has anyone else noticed the higher you are above the cap of a fish, the more bites you get? My friend and I have been fishing moat carps for his Lu Shang's for the past 3 weeks, both using insect paste and a carbon rod, his fishing lv is 8, and mine is 47, and I consistently hit the 200 fish cap a couple of hours before him. I would say it was dumbluck but this has been every day for the last few weeks, and when my wife came out to help, same deal, w/ Lv 8 fishing they would hit the fatigue pulling up only moat carp around the same time, whereas I would finish a pretty nice time ahead of them. I want to add this to the main page, but it seems like it would be the type of thing to cause edit wars, so asking, has anyone else noticed this while fishing on their main and then, say, their mule? (Easy enough to verify with moat carp.)

don't know how old this comment is, but i actually think this is true. i've found i have trouble getting fish to bite while the fishers right next to me are having a field day. i'm about 50 levels under the cap of the fish (39 fishing, bastore bream in port windurst). presumably the people next to me have higher skill (they are both in waders+apron).--Yjhuoh 09:15, April 6, 2010 (UTC)

Would someone who has experience with the Fish Ranking contest thing link that page in here and maybe add the NPC to this page as well as the Selbina page? --Syeria 00:49, 30 April 2006 (PDT)

I noticed that some fish, on area pages that have fish on them, have their level caps on them. I was wondering if it would be possible to list the rod/bait combos on the fish pages under "Obtained By." --Syeria 04:10, 25 May 2006 (PDT)

I think alot of the fish do have that... maybe I'm wrong, lemme check Moat Carp --Chrisjander 07:20, 25 May 2006 (PDT)

Yup, moat carp has all the fishing details on it. And I know alot of other fish have that info on there too. --Chrisjander 07:20, 25 May 2006 (PDT)

Some do and some don't. You can search easily from the Fish page. It would be a good project for a fisherman to undertake. --Gahoo 07:24, 25 May 2006 (PDT)

Guess I should have checked more than 2 fish pages before posting then. >< Well it would be nice for someone who knows to do. --Syeria 11:48, 25 May 2006 (PDT)

New Guildmaster?[edit]

The NPC listed for Fishing Guildmaster seems to have changed, the npc Thubu Parohren now gives Fishing Rank and and tells you items to turn in for advancement. --Jhes 07:53, 31 October 2006 (EST)

Lu Shang rod[edit]

Doesn't it count as both synthetic and wooden? I gather this from the description given by SE when they changed the fishing system. Tahngarthor 18:44, 6 January 2007 (EST)

Fish Chart[edit]

Anyone mind if I start a fishing chart similar to the recipe charts on the other craft pages?

Obviously, it's not going to be exactly the same, but it'll serve the same purpose; it'll list all the fish, their skill level, and how to catch them.
Here's an example of what I'm thinking (may need some tweaking):

Fish Skill Cap Location Bait Rods
Nebimonite
27

  Will Possibly Break:

<fish>
<skill>
  • <area>
  • <bait>
  • <rods>

  Will Possibly Break:

  • <breakable rods>

FFXIclopedia seems to be lacking in the fishing department (there isn't even a fishing table on half the fish pages), so I think this will help a bit. ~ Karuberu 19:16, 11 January 2007 (EST)

I would love to see a list like that for the fish. I've been wanting to update info on them here, but there's no solid layout here for me to update; so I just try to contribute at Kida's site instead. But while I would love to see something here, I'm guessing the page would become an ungodly monster in terms of length, because of how long the lists of locations and rods can become for some fish and junk. Furthermore, some rods may get line snaps on items/fish (fishing skill may or may not have a factor in this) even if they manage to avoid rod breaks.

I'd offer suggestions on how a fish table here could work, but I haven't been able to think of any. --Lunarcurtain 17:02, 30 January 2007 (EST)

What about using the XEks.gif and CheckCheck.gif in a separate column to indicate a possible break? Or maybe something like Exclamation.gif (but not this one since it should be reserved for {{verification}}) to indicate a possible break. Also, might consider using a template for each fish/row. --Gahoo 17:31, 30 January 2007 (EST)
What exactly did you have in mind for a template? And yeah, I like the idea of using symbols or something to indicate a possible break. Clan Wind uses a similar system with strikethroughs, which I like, but probably wouldn't work here, since it's not really FFXIclopedia's style. I don't really like the CheckCheck.gif or XEks.gif, because it might get confusing (check for break or check for it's safe?) and/or make the page too "busy." I do like the Exclamation.gif though... maybe a different exclamation point image? ~ Karuberu 22:24, 30 January 2007 (EST)
Something like that could work for showing rod statuses. But I can't think of any way to get around listing locations on the same page, since some fish are just way too common. Like crayfish can be fished up in over 45 different locations; that would make that one entry almost as long as a 1-10 recipe list on some other crafting pages. Overall, I think that fish locations should be left to individual fish pages, and to the map pages themselves. --Lunarcurtain 17:44, 30 January 2007 (EST)
Hmm... well, there are only a few fish 1-10, so crayfish dominating the chart may not necessarily be a bad thing. Though I do agree, the fish locations for common fish might make the page gigantic... I'd like to see how it looks before removing it. ~ Karuberu 22:24, 30 January 2007 (EST)
Subpages for 1-10, 11-20, 21-30, etc. could solve the crayfish problem. Then the fishing page has something like Armor Sets has. --Gahoo 15:53, 3 April 2007 (EDT)
I'll go ahead and start making them on the main page to see how it looks. If it's too big, we can easily move them to subpages. ~ Karuberu 15:58, 3 April 2007 (EDT)
I'd vote subpages just based on 1-10. In fact, I think maybe all of these crafting lists should be moved there. --Gahoo 17:22, 3 April 2007 (EDT)
Maybe a single subpage for all the recipes/fish, but multiple pages would make it difficult to browse through the recipes. ~ Karuberu 17:40, 4 April 2007 (EDT)
The locations can be combined, i.e. Crayfish can be caught from "Carpenters' Landing (Central, North and South)". That could cut down a lot of lines. --Gahoo 18:10, 4 April 2007 (EDT)

Fisherman's Belt[edit]

The item is listed as being obtainable at the Novice level, but I'm a novice and I'm only given the option to purchase a Robber Rig. Correction needed?

I too have noticed that, I'm only being offered the Robber Rig and none of the other items. --Geekgirl101 (talk) 03:04, March 21, 2015 (UTC)

Requested Move[edit]

Gear vs. Fish[edit]

Move: Well if you look at the top-most post here perhaps Rixie was right 2 years ago when he/she suggested that the fish be separate from the gear. We have categories for Fishing and Fish, and a deleted one for Fishing Gear. The AH has Fish and Fishing Gear. Do people think it is ok as is? Maybe we should have a static page for "Fishing Gear" which lists the rods/bait/armor and just link it from Fishing? Link to Fishing to category:Fish as well? --Gahoo 18:20, 28 February 2007 (EST)
Move: There's enough gear to constitute a healthy category and I'm sure it'd be helpful to some people, so why not have one? I think Category:Fishing Gear would be the best category, to go along with the AH-related changes, and we can just move the rod/bait charts over to that page. ~ Karuberu 14:05, 24 June 2007 (CDT)
Move: Speak now or forever hold your piece. This move contemplates 3 separate fishing areas. 1. Fishing Gear - corresponds to the AH category and lists the gear. 2. Fish - corresponds to the AH category and lists fish. 3. Fishing - this category, which talks about the craft itself, and how to fish/fishing. --User:Gahoo/Sig 13:23, 9 July 2007 (CDT)
Move/Comment: I agree with Gahoo... wiki it all onto the Fishing Main page put the moon charts and things on there, keep the AH stuff separate. She 12:44, 17 July 2007 (CDT)
Move/Comment I don't mean to be off topic in the least bit, but if we're separating fish from fishing craft, we should do the same with the rest of the crafts. Fishing gear should indeed be switched to another category, and possibly a Category:Rods and Bait so there's something for Category:Weapons to link to that excludes the fishing armor.--Dragonspight 20:01, 14 July 2007 (CDT)
Comment: Don't you mean Category:Armor for the tunica? ^^ --User:Charitwo/Sig 20:02, 14 July 2007 (CDT)
Comment: No, it's just poorly written, sorry. I meant I *didn't* want to put the tunica under Category:Weapons (for rods/bait). I intended for it to be a negative, but you may have seen it as a positive statement w. I think there should be Category:Rods and Baits with rods, baits, and lures, of course (excluding broken rods, since they're not equipment), and Category:Fishing Gear with all the fishing items. I tried rewriting it to make it clearer. --Dragonspight 20:11, 14 July 2007 (CDT)
Comment: I see no reason why fishing armor and fishing equipment should be in different categories. There are only 11 armor items - they don't need their own category, especially when it is not one that SE has. They can and should simply be placed in the to be created Fishing Gear category. --User:Gahoo/Sig 15:22, 17 July 2007 (CDT)

Resolution: Move per the below. I will get to this soon. --User:Gahoo/Sig 15:22, 17 July 2007 (CDT)

This move contemplates 3 separate fishing areas. 1. Fishing Gear - corresponds to the AH category and lists the gear. 2.
Fish - corresponds to the AH category and lists fish. 3. Fishing - this category, which talks about the craft itself,
and how to fish/fishing.

Muddy Siredon[edit]

Muddy Siredon is not a lvl 10 cap like it says here I was fishing for newts when I got skill on these a few times and my fishing skill is lvl 17. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Crawlerbasher (talkcontribs).

early fatigue[edit]

Did the patch notes from SE clearly state that the new 10-fish fatigue was for characters below level 20? I currently have a character at exactly level 20 and they're only able to get 10 fish before hitting fatigue. --Nobodyreal 14:18, 2 February 2009 (UTC)

I'm suffering from the same problem. What's going on here? --AlthorEnchantor 16:07, 10 March 2009 (UTC)
After doing more testing, level 21 is required to break the fatigue barrier. Not much of a difference in effort, really. But significant.--Nobodyreal 05:54, 3 April 2009 (UTC)
I have a level 20 mule that I can fish all night long on. Were your characters newly made? --Nyagchilios 19:09, September 20, 2009 (UTC)

If the characters are less than 14 days old, they too will suffer the insanely crude "early fatigue" rule. Thanks SE for taking the piss out of your customers.

--Charm Ring!--[edit]

A Charm ring better's your chances of making a catch! Best of Luck! Dasi/Hunini/Ogiie

What's a Charm Ring? Nothing about this ring exists anywhere on any website. --Geekgirl101 (talk) 03:06, March 21, 2015 (UTC)

Minor Edit to Guides[edit]

I'm new to wiki editing so I just wanted to say that I made a minor change and added my guide in the Fishing Guides section! Hopefully that is ok :) --Talila 18:23, November 6, 2010 (UTC)

Looks great! ^^ User:Dragoy of Fenrir/Sig 00:03, November 8, 2010 (UTC)

Fatigue[edit]

My fatigue does not reset at Japanese Midnight. I'm a level 99 character. I fish until I hit my fatigue cap, usually at around midnight PST, then go to sleep. I can't always resume fishing first thing after I wake up, but when I do, say around 11:00 AM (Japanese Midnight is supposed to be at 8:00 AM for me btw) I still get many of the red warnings "You must wait longer to perform that action" when I try to fish consecutively. For those who don't know, that's a sign that fatigue is growing. You shouldn't see those until you get at least 50 fish.

I don't think fatigue is strictly related to the passing of midnight in Japan. I think a certain waiting time factor is involved as well or may possibly be the only factor, and that fatigue resolution is not absolute, but that it deteriorates over a period of time.

Time to delete unfinished guides?[edit]

The barely-started "Fishing Guide by Kmomo" and "Reikofu's Fishing Guide" have not been updated in over 3 years, and yet links to them remain under the guides section. The authors themselves admit they are unfinished at the bottom of each guide. With no updates expected in the foreseeable future, surely its time to consider removing the link on the fishing page at the very least? As someone who only recently took up fishing, I found it frustrating sifting through these unfinished guides in order to find the gems such as "Fishing for Fun and Profit by Ctownwoody".

If someone does wish to make a guide, please finish it before you add a main page link. Romon (talk) 23:55, February 10, 2013 (UTC)

Fishing Fatigue[edit]

SE seems to have removed the extra fatigue from lower level jobs.

I fished up ~200 fish every day on a level 15, 16, 17 WHM (Leveling up due to Records of Eminence goals).

Feel free to verify this. I'm not sure what the new lower limit is, if any, but it's definitely not level 20 anymore.

EDIT: Or maybe it's because I have a higher level job available to the character? The wording in the wiki entry suggests that it only matters what job is used during fishing, but that's incorrect right now.

I'll do some more testing.

Increased Skill Gains[edit]

I've noticed that using a rod that's too big for catching the fish results in a much greater chance of getting skill gains. I've done this test several times during differing moon phases (someone tried saying that the moon phase was in my favour as it was close to a new moon) with using a Halycon and Carbon Fishing rods and a Robber Rig for bait whilst catching Shall Shells with level 31+7 fishing skill. Results were I always caught the fish with the Halycon but only got 0.1 or 0.2 skill points every 4 hours. With the Carbon Fishing rod I rarely caught a fish but even when I got the "Whatever caught the hook was too small to catch with this rod" I was getting 0.1 or 0.2 skill points at a much more frequent rate, I would estimate about 0.4-0.6 points every hour. Moon phases didn't seem to affect the frequency of skill gains, or if they did the amount was so negligable I didn't even notice. --Geekgirl101 (talk) 03:16, March 21, 2015 (UTC)
