Break synth

A technique for saving money while raising craft skill. Also referred to as "break-skilling".

This technique is mainly used when trying to skill up on a synth with moderately expensive ingredients but little or no real value when successfully made. If a craftskill is within 5 points of the recipe cap for a synthesis, the crafter has a chance to gain skill on a synthesis regardless of whether the outcome of a synth is success or failure. Thus, a crafter will deliberately attempt the recipe in conditions which lead to extremely slim chance of success, and use an appropriate moghancement to conserve materials when the synthesis fails, under the circumstances that the conserved materials on a failure are worth more than the value of a successfully made item.

Traditionally, break synthing was first used to complete the journey from 98 to 100 Woodworking on Iron-splitters. Woodworkers would purposefully attempt the synthesis with smithing as low as 45 and hope to save the Adaman Ingot ingredient. Later, the technique also became popular as a method to skill through the 70-80 region in Goldsmithing. However, the opportunities for savings through break-skilling are not necessarily restricted to just these two crafts; astute crafters may see opportunities like these everywhere.
