Historical Background
In Christian demonology (Late Medieval- Early Modern European), Sabnak (also spelled Sabnock, Sabnac, Sabnach, Sabnacke, Sab Nac, Salmac, Savnock) is a demon who holds the title Great Marquis of Hell, commanding 50 legions of demons. He appears as a lion-headed soldier covered in armor and armed with weapons, riding a pale horse. When called by a conjurer, he can build tall towers, castles, and cities furnished with all the best weapons and ammunition. He can also afflict people with gangrene or cause their wounds to putrefy with maggot larvae for several days. Sabnak is known for giving good familiars to conjurers. Some sources state he can turn men into stone. Sabnak is 1 of 69 demons listed in the Pseudomonarchia Dæmonum and 1 of 72 listed in the Ars Goetia (the first section of the Lesser Key of Solomon).
