Historical Background

Sagittarius is traditionally the ninth constellation out of 12 in the Zodiac. It represents a centaur holding a bow ready to launch an arrow. It is a Fire-element sign and a Mutable sign (signs considered flexible and adaptable). Sagittarius governs the 9th House (rules higher education, travel, religion, philosophy, goals & aims) and it is ruled by the celestial body Jupiter. Sagittarius is a constellation bounded by Scorpius, Capricornus, Ophiuchus, Serpens, Scutum, Aquila, Corona Australis, Telescopium, Microscopium, Indus. The center of the Milky Way Galaxy resides in the constellation of Sagittarius. Its named stars are (Alpha to Zeta): Rukhbat, Arkab Prior, El Nasl, Kaus Media, Kaus Australis, Ascella. Traditionally, people born from November 22 to December 21 (or December 22, depending on when the Winter Solstice forms) are considered Sagittarius. Sagittarius is Latin for "Archer".

In Greek mythology, Sagittarius was considered a non-descript Centaur. Sagittarius is sometimes associated with the famed Centaur, Chiron, but Chiron was traditionally identified with the constellation Centaurus. The constellation Sagitta is considered an arrow fired by Sagittarius. In Mesopotamian mythology, the constellation was identified with Pabilsag (a god who was the patron deity of the city of Larak, destroyed in the mythical Great Flood).

In the Roman army, a Sagittarius was a rank-and-file soldier who used a bow as their primary weapon. They tended to be members of the Auxiliary (see Antican Auxiliarius). They used bows made from bone and steel (arcus) which could shoot arrows 330m (1080 feet) (longer than the English longbow of Medieval Europe, which could only fire ~700 feet) and iron-tipped arrows. They wore conical helmets and mail.
